He was the first Sullivan County casualty of World War II and was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. 7, 1941 Private First Class Hoyt was in the mess barracks when Hickam Field, Pearl Harbor was attacked. In December 1941 he was stationed at Hickam Field, Honolulu.
